Europe 🇪🇺, Open Borders, more Freedom — It All Started in Schengen!

Yesterday, I had the chance to Visit Schengen – a name almost everyone in Europe knows, yet so few truly understand.

Many believe Schengen is an acronym. Or a big city somewhere in Europe. In reality, Schengen is a beautiful village in the south-east of LuXembourg - Let's Make It Happen of around 700 inhabitants, located directly on the banks of the Moselle river at a visible tri‑border point of Luxembourg 🇱🇺 , France 🇫🇷 and Germany 🇩🇪. A place where European history was made.

It was here, on 14 June 1985, aboard the Princesse Marie‑Astrid, that representatives of Luxembourg🇱🇺, France 🇫🇷 , Germany 🇩🇪, Belgium 🇧🇪 and the Netherlands 🇳🇱 , signed the Schengen Agreement – laying the foundation for free movement across Europe.

Today, two original pieces of the Berlin Wall in Schengen symbolise this Freedom as well. A stunning, modern and interactive museum tells Europe’s story and its evolution. And throughout the village, you can truly feel how historically significant this place is.

Our Luxembourg Convention Bureau is promoting this meaningful place for international meetings and conferences in the heart of Europe, clients may experience the famous boat Princesse Marie-Astrid, the Schengen Museum as well as the Schloss, the Schengener Haff and the great countryside at the Moselle river!

I am deeply grateful to be European with a very international family and a very international job. To enjoy freedom of movement – and at the same time to reflect critically on what we must all do, together, to keep our Europe safe, liveable and worth loving.

My sincere thanks to the new Director of the Schengen Museum, Marlene Schmidt, and her dedicated team, and to all the passionate Europeans and people of Schengen for their daily commitment. 🇪🇺

With Europe Day coming up on 9 May, a public holiday uniquely celebrated in Luxembourg, let’s take a moment to reflect, engage and celebrate what Europe means to us. Visit, learn, discuss, and help shape Europe’s future.
